I woke up startled at 4:00am by a work nightmare!
Does this ever happen to you? According to a survey by eachnight.com, 64% of Americans have nightmares about work.
My bad work dream started out as me working the service advisor counter. A widowed lady came in with her vehicle, told me what was happening with her vehicle and when she would be back to pick it up.
Next, her vehicle went into the shop for diagnosis. As with some diagnoses, there was a bit of disassembly required. I got the report from the technician and began creating estimates BUT I was too late. The lady appeared at my counter expecting to pick up her vehicle right away. It actually would need to to stay at the shop for 2 days.
It was too late in the day to put it back together and wouldn't make financial sense.
The part wouldn't arrive till day after tomorrow.
I offered to give her a ride but she was having none of it.
That's when I woke up panicked!
I'm not a fan of being a victim and giving away my power to fix a bad situation, whether it be in real life or a dream. I decided to analyse where I had gone wrong.
Maybe I not fast enough at creating the estimates?!?
Was the customer behaving unreasonable and bullying me?!?
As I worked my way from the end to the beginning, I found the problem!
I had failed to set proper expectations!
While she gave told me her time frame, I should have let her know what the shop's was.
Usually with diagnosis appointments where there could be some disassembly and/or where parts may not be available right away, I discuss leaving the vehicle with us over night.
What is the moral of the story?
Things can go wrong. Customers can be upset. It can stress us out so much it can affect our sleep BUT you have to power to change the situation.
